The Power of Repetition

Repetition is important.

When you’re living in the fitness world the phrase goes, “gotta get those reps in.” In fitness, reps are a good thing. Obviously, you don’t want to do the same exercise everyday, but it’s important to return to an exercise regularly in order to strengthen an important muscle.

Same goes with blogging, or for building any habit really.

When you find something that you want to blog about it can be frustrating when you don’t know what to write about. You’ll start to craft a post and then realize you just wrote about pretty much the same idea last week. I’m here to tell you that’s okay. Get your reps in!

There’s only so much advice and so many ideas to go around. When you find the ones that resonate with you it’s okay to pass over them multiple times. Doing so strengthens the idea in your mind. If it’s good advice or a good idea, both you and your reader will benefit from hearing it multiple times. And it’s okay if it’s an idea that’s someone else touched on. Give it your own spin. Spin it as many ways as you possibly can. Shine light on the idea from all angles so it continues to shine bright in your mind.

Same goes for when you’re learning a skill.

I’m learning to draw right now. I’m trying to build the habit. Sometimes I have the energy to learn a new skill and to read the next chapter in the book I’m using, but sometimes I don’t have the required energy or focus. It’s important to keep the habit going each day, even if you’re not learning something new. Repetition of old lessons comes in extremely handy in these situations. Just repeat an old lesson, but maybe this time focus on a different element of that lesson, or just take longer to complete the lesson this time around.

Same goes for blogging. When you’re trying to build the habit it’s most important just to stick with it. Even if you’re repeating ideas.

Do whatever you can to create everyday. It’s been over two weeks since my last blog post, but I bet touching on old ideas sparks new ones.
