What Curation Can Teach You About Finding Focus for Your Blog

Day 4 of the Zero to Hero challenge asks you to follow five new topics in the Reader, and begin finding blogs (and bloggers) you love.

It’s an important exercise because, as the challenge indicates, it introduces you to the greater WordPress blogging community and allows you to discover other writers. I think it’s important because it teaches you about finding focus for your own blog.

The best WordPress tags offer a high signal-to-noise ratio. Most tags offer way too much noise, with very little signal. The key is to start with 5 broad topics to follow, and then narrow those topics down over time by following more specific tags within those topics. As you add more specific tags you can stop following the broader topics. As your tags get narrower, you will begin to find writers you like and you can follow them.

You can grow the focus of your own writing the same way you curate your follows. Start with a broad topic and get specific. Find your niche and spend your time cultivating relationships within that pocket.
